Echoes & Alleys

The pilgrimage that started it all

I found my passion for visiting sacred sites as a result of a three month pilgrimage that I took with my Mum around France a few years ago. We had 13 churches on our list, but we went to many more. It was a life changing experience for me, once which I am in the process of writing a book on.

I often think back to this time and realise that I have a habit of visiting churches and chapels and other sacred sites on my own anyway, without the influence of my mother. It is a habit so natural, I am not entirely sure why I do it - am I trying to find pieces of God and put them together? Am I seeking something that I think lives within the walls, floors and the very air of these places?

I have continued the pilgrimage not only in France, but also in Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, China and many other countries. Wherever I have been, I have visited a church, a chapel or a place of worship. Even though I do not like to go to church services or join ministries or communities, I can’t help but feel that there is something in the air of these places that teaches me silent lessons.

This blog is an extension of this natural habit of mine. As I prepare my bags for my upcoming trip to Italy, I take much time to pause and not to reflect on anything but to practice being. I think that being is a key Christian practice that I missed out on hearing, or perhaps wasn’t taught to me, growing up. To step outside of the race for trying to be different or trying to do more and have more... and simply be who I am, who God made me to be.

May these words be less about me, and more about the path. May they meet whoever needs them, in whatever way they need them.
